There are
numerous lucrative businesses that one can easily start in this land of
opportunities known as Nigeria. I’ll list and also explain briefly some of the
businesses that you can start.
I’m
currently located at Lagos, Nigeria, so this article is based on my view of
small and medium scale businesses that Lagos is known for. I’m writing with the
hope that you might find it helpful or refer it to someone who may be in need
of it.
WEARS AND CLOTHING MATERIALS
There are
numerous types or categories of wears and clothing materials business to
venture into. However, it’s important that you do a proper research and then
decide on the particular one to choose. From my experience, people that engage
in this business buys from the importers at the wholesale level or buys from
the wholesalers at the retail level. These products are also made locally so
the choice is yours to make. Doing this
business on any of these levels most a times depends on your capital base and
location.
The requirements
are knowledge of the trade, a startup capital and a shop located inside the
particular market of your product.
Examples
are; men and women’s wears, children’s wears, foot wears, cottons, bed sheets
e.t.c.
NB: most
people still do this business here in Nigeria without a shop. Some use their
homes as their point of sale while others move from one place to another.
PROVISIONS
Provisions
are another retail and wholesale business one can start here in Nigeria. There are
numerous products that falls under this category. It is also advisable to do a
proper research and then decide whether to buy in bulk and sell a combination of
different product types or a singular product type.
Most Nigerian
companies produce these products and the wholesalers make purchases from them. Examples
are; tea, milk, biscuits, soaps e.t.c.
COSMETICS PRODUCTS
Cosmetics
products are another widely sought after goods that one should consider
selling. These products are produced here in Nigeria but some wholesalers
import foreign ones. Examples are; attachments, weavons, hair creams, relaxers
e.t.c.
VEHICLE SPARE PARTS
This is a
very popular product here in Lagos. Some markets and even a tribe are already
known for this business so it’s important that you situate yourself in the
market if you intend going into this business. Though I don’t really know much
about this business but one thing I know for sure is that it requires huge
capital to be kick-started.
If you want
to venture into this business, you must first learn the trade.
BUILDING MATERIALS
This is
another business that is currently booming in Nigeria. Numerous houses are
being built on daily basis so the products are highly needed. To venture into
this business, you have to do a proper research and also learn the trade.
FOOD PRODUCTS
Food is one
of the basic needs of man so you don’t need to be told about how lucrative this
business is. If you do a proper research, you’ll discover that one of your
major challenges will be tackling competitions,
ELECTRONICS PRODUCTS
This
business is very lucrative as well but just like other businesses, requires
that you learn the trade, conduct a proper research and have a sufficient
capital base.
ELECTRICAL PRODUCTS
Electrical products
are dealt in similar way with electronics.
MUSICAL PRODUCTS
Musical
instruments are majorly done on the retail level. One notable thing is that it
requires huge startup capital.
PETROLEUM PRODUCTS
Fuel, engine
oil and numerous others are examples of products under this category. If you
have plans to invest in this sector, then you sure have a lot of research to
conduct.
AUTOMOBILES
Importing new
and fairly used cars is another business embraced here in Nigeria. You can find
out the reason by doing a detailed research.
BEVERAGE PRODUCTS
Soft and
alcoholic drinks are in no doubt booming in sales here in Nigeria. Venturing into
this business as a retailer or wholesaler are both lucrative.
JEWELRIES
Necklaces,
bangles, and other items under this category are in high demand. Nevertheless,
it requires that you learn you learn the trade for a specific period.
FURNITURES
Most
retailers of furniture products are also the producers. But you can also be a
retailer after following due procedures of learning the trade, conducting a
proper research and fulfilling other important requirements.
CLOTHING ACCESSORIES
Hangers,
dummies and the likes are examples of clothing materials sold separately from
the clothes.
STATIONERIES
Stationeries
are mostly sold in bookstores over here in Nigeria. So if you have interest in
this business, you might as well think of setting up one.
CONCLUSION
Nigeria as a
country is a very big market with numerous business activities. As I indicated
earlier, I was only providing brief descriptions of the businesses that I listed.
